Library

Mount Carmel College of Teacher Education has a full fledged library and Information Center with all the modern facilities like Computer aided information retrieval and Reprographic Services, including printer and internet facilities. The Library has collection of nearly 12,700 Volumes which apart from books include back volumes of about 500 Periodicals, 100 Theses and 255 CDs in the thrust areas of various subjects. The Library also provides information and guidance regarding electronic journals and On-Line information retrieval to the interested readers.

The Library caters to the needs of 180 regular users in the college which include 35 faculty, 25 M.Ed students and 120 B.Ed students. It also provides information service to the P.G students, Research scholars and teachers from the neighbouring academic institutions and colleges. As part of the automation process the library has purchased Software for University Libraries (SOUL)developed by INFLIBNET, Ahamadabad. Library has fully automated its housekeeping activities and information services in the year 2005. 

The genesis of the Mount Carmel College Library was in 1953 along with the Mount Carmel College of Teacher Education. Mount Carmel College Library had a small beggining and over these 54 years its growth has been phenomenal. It has grown and transformed from " Book only library to modern " digital library". 

Mission of the Library                    

The mission of the Library is to acquire, to organize, to utilize and to preserve the information sources and to extend effective and efficient service to the students, research scholars and faculty members of the college.

Location

At present, the library is functioning in a total floor space of 4613 sq.ft. in the first floor of the building of the Mount Carmel College. Journal/Periodical section, Electronic Information Center, Reference Section, Reading Room etc are functioning in one part and Circulation Section, Processing Unit, Stock Area are functioning in second part of the library.

Organisation and Administration of the Library               

The library is an institution, which accumulate the knowledge and transmits the same to the public and exploration of the new knowledge. It is the back bone of any education institution and hence it requires an efficient organization  to serve its readers in dissemination of knowledge. The activities of even two individuals require co- ordination and co- operation to be effective and efficient. Administration of Mount Carmel College Library is well structured and knit together  to fulfill its objectives and aims of its parent organization. The Principal, Librarian, Library Assistants, Technical assistants and other staff members in the library support the library activities. 

Working Hour               

The Library is open on weekdays from 8 am to 5 pm (Monday to Friday) and from 10 am to 4.30 pm on weekends. 

Membership                   

The library has an Institutional membership base of 180 (including 120 B.Ed students, 25 M.Ed students and 35 faculty members). The B.Ed students are eligible to borrow three books at a time for a period of 14 days. M.Ed students can borrow 5 books and staff can borrow 10 books at a time for a period of 30 days. Apart from the institutional members, Non-institutional people i.e teachers, research scholars and students of the neighbouring educational institution also utilize the library for reference.

Library rule

Library rules help the librarian and staff in smooth running of the library. The sympathetic and ever helpful attitude of the library staff is the golden rule in this library. Mount Carmel College library has framed rules according to its nature and object of the organization.

  • Umbrellas, bags, big purse, books, files etc. are not allows inside the Library  .
  • Users are permitted to carry only loose sheets of paper and pen.
  • Users should not cause damage to books, funiture etc.
  • Books are  issued on Library   Card only.
  • During issue the condition of the books that is damaged mutilation should be informed, as otherwise user is held responsible.
  • Reference books, dictionaries, manuals, maps etc are not loaned.
  • They shouldnot trace or mark on books journals etc.
  • Replacement of books in racks by user is prohibited.
  • Use of mobile phones are strictly prohibited.
  • Admission of outsider is at the discretion of the authorities.
  • Students should not on any account circulate books to other students or outsiders.
  • All books must be return to the library 3 days before the close of each term.

Collection of the library

Library is a dynamic instrument of Education. The fundamental function of a library is to build up a  collection, which is dynamic and capable of meeting the changing needs and demands of present as well as future uses. A well-equipped and well-managed library is the foundation of Modern Educational set up. 

Mount Carmel college library has a wonderful collection of all types of material printed or non printed information which fulfill the needs of its clientele.

Books :-     The library has a collection of over 12700 books, of these more than the 750 books are kept us reference books. Around 300 to 400 basic to advanced books are added every year for the uses of the library.

Journals :-   Current periodicals- Journals are the medium of communication because of its up-to- datedness. The library subscribes around 30 Journals every year.

Back Volumes:- The old journals are hardbound and kept us back volumes. So far the library has built up over 500 back volumes of the journals.

e- Journals :- In the electronic age, the information seeking process has become so much easier and the quicker by e-journals and digital library. Mount Carmel College library also has activated online access to 10 e-journals. May more electronic sources will be brought under on- line access the near future.

CD- Rom Databases :-   The library has CD- ROMs for the users to retreive necessary scientific data. The library has above 300 CDs to extend effective information retrieval services to users. Besides these CDs library has a television with VCP- player. There are a number of video cassettes on Education are on stack.

Newspapers and Magazines :-Mount Carmel library subscribes 3 leading Newspapers and are kept out separately in the periodical section. A good no. of magazines like, Employment News, Wisdom Frontline, India today, The Week, Kerala Calling, Janapatham are also subscribed for the benefit of the student.

Different Sections of the Library

    1.Acquisition Section 

Acquisition Section is an important section, which acquires the books and the other reading materials. The standard of an Institution is evaluated by the acquisition section. The major duties involved in acquisition section of Mount Carmel College library are:

  • Personal examination of all requests for orders to determine whether the library already has them, and where and how to order them.
  • Supervision and handling of all orders whether acquired by purchased, gift.
  • Keeping accurate records of fund accounts in order to know the details of the fund  allocations  and  other details of the book recording.
  • Maintenance and use of bibliographic aids.
  • Preparation of bills and payment.
  • Informing individuals about the new arrivals.
  • Ordering and acquiring of books, periodicals and other resources.

2. Technical Section or processing Unit 

Accessioning, Classification and Cataloguing are the prime work of the technical section. This library has classified the whole collection of documents of Dewey Decimal Classification Scheme.   It has fully automated its house keeping operations and on-line automated Cataloguing system for the easy retrieval of information. The Library is using Library Management Software named Software for University Libraries (SOUL) developed by INFLIBNET Centre, Ahamedabad.

3. Circulation Section

Circulation section also known as the counter, acts as heart of the library from where the accessioned materials of information comes in and goes out of the library, in a regularized manner. It is the place from where the information flow is monitored. Some preliminary reference queries are also answered here. Some important works of this section includes:-

4. Reference Section

The purpose of the reference section is to provide current information needed to the users. Right information to the right user at the right time is the motto behind every successful library. The success of the library solely depends on the ability of the reference librarian and the collection of the reference sources.

To provide effective reference Services Mount Carmel College Library has a good collection of reference sources like Dictionaries, general Encyclopedias, Atlases, Yearbooks etc. It follows open access system, where the users are freely allowed to interact with books and other materials. When they could not find the books or other materials required for getting their information, the library staff assists them for alternative sources of information by their expertise and experience. Rare books and other materials, which are not easily replaceable, are kept under lock and key and are provided to the users only on demand. There are other special services like Question Bank, Syllabus and books for NET/SET examination, Book Bank etc.

5. Periodical Section 

 This section is an important section dealing with the primary source of information, namely the journals. The library has about 135 titles of back volumes of periodicals and presently subscribes about 30 journals. When all the issues of journals are received, they are bound as a volume. The journals are arranged in classification order and subject order. The important works of the journal section are registration of all the journals, Display of the journals in the appropriate display rack etc. Journals are issued only for reference in the library.

6. Electronic Information Centre

    In the present Scenario, libraries are affected by a high flow of information centre which includes digital collection, ie.,e-books, e- journals, CD. Rom databases etc.

In Mount Carmel College Library, various types of electronic information sources are available. Ph.D theses, General Encyclopedia, Traveling Guides, Model Question papers in electronic format are a few to mention. The subject websites, online free journals and Magazines could be accessed through Internet. Important websites are provided to the users.

7. Reprographic Unit

Today, reprography plays a very important role in the transmission of knowledge in the library resources and services. Xeroxing or photocopying of the information is the main work of the Reprographic unit. Introducing Reprographic services helped to preserve the document from stealing or mishandling.

8. Property Counter

Property counter is an important place of the library. It takes care of the belongings of the users and visitors of the library.
